## The capital of Cuba

The capital of Cuba is Havana (La Habana) with more than 2.2 million inhabitants. The total area of Havana is 720 km2 and the banks of this city are washed by a warm Gulf Stream. Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the most visited city in the Caribbean. The symbol of the city is a lighthouse with a shiny metal dome. Two fortresses used to protect the city from pirates - El Morro y San Salvador, which are located behind the lighthouse.

## Flag of Cuba

The flag of Cuba, also known as "La Estrella Solitaria", was created in 1850. The flag indicates great simplicity and is displayed in three colors (red, blue and white) in perfect harmony. It consists of three blue stripes, which represent the compartments in which the island was divided at that time; two white stripes symbolizing the power of the ideal of independence; and the red triangle, which symbolizes equality, freedom, and brotherhood; in the center of which is a lone star, with five points, as a symbol of absolute freedom among other nations.

The current population in Cuba is 11,328,214. The population density in Cuba is 106 inhabitants per km2. The average age is 42.2 years. Cuba ranks 83rd in the world in terms of population. The most numerous ethnic component consists of Mulati (51%), 37% White (especially Spaniards). The rest are blacks and Chinese.

Time zone: GMT - 6, which means that the time shift to London is -5 hours during winter and summer time. However, the time does not change on the same date as in England, so for a limited time (usually two weeks in spring and two in autumn) the difference is usually only -4 hours.

## Currency of Cuba

Cuba has a dual economy. The official currencies in Cuba are the Cuban Pesos (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Pesos (CUC). It is theoretically assumed that tourists can only use convertible pesos (CUC), but in practice there is nothing to prevent them from visiting Cadeca (exchange offices) and exchanging convertible pesos for Cuban Pesos with an approximate exchange rate of about 25 Pesos for a convertible peso. 1CUC =0.759004 GBP but it is always good to check the current exchange rate, for example here: <https://https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=1&From=CUC&To=GBP> It is important to mention that exchanging US dollars for convertible pesos are taxed at 10%; while the change to other currencies, such as euros, pounds or Canadian dollars, is without this tax.

Although the Cuban economy works mainly with cash, credit and debit cards are accepted and you can pay with them at resorts and ATMs. The most common are Visa and Mastercard. Cards issued by US banks are not accepted in Cuba.

**Tip: If you plan to experience a real Cuba, we recommend that you exchange and always have the local menu (CUP) with you. Not only will your holiday be significantly cheaper, as you can only pay in local currency in local shops. But it will also force you to visit local businesses, buy fruit in small street stalls and especially talk to the locals. Of course, to get the local currency, you will need some knowledge of Spanish, but you will definitely not experience authentic Cuba without CUPs in your wallet.**

## Visa to Cuba

Bilateral visa application applies. To the citizens of England - for the purpose of tourism, the so-called tourist card (tarjeta del turista) is enough. If you are travelling from another country to Cuba, we recommend contacting a tourist agency or airline, which provides these cards in many countries. The tourist card is valid for 30 days of stay. For purposes other than tourism, visas are required to apply to the Embassy of Cuba. Upon entry, it is necessary to prove with a valid health insurance and a return ticket.

### Extension of stay

The stay with a tourist card can be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office in Havana as well as in other capitals of the provinces of Cuba. Confirmation of accommodation must be submitted with the application.

Cuba is a culinary gem with the possibility of satisfying every taste. Hundreds of new restaurants have opened thanks to the recent relaxation in politics on the island and they are waiting to share with you some of the most famous Cuban national dishes.

Although Cuba has a lot to offer to its visitors, keep in mind that Cuba is still a developing country.

## Typical dishes of Cuban cuisine

### Ropa Vieja

Ropa Vieja is the most representative typical Cuban dish. Its name comes from its appearance. The exact origin of this dish is a mystery, some say it came to Cuba from the Canary Islands, although there are no historical references to this fact.

### Tamalas

Tamales are made from freshly ground corn and spices. All this is wrapped in corn leaves, cooked and served for pleasure. You can find them all over Cuba and it is easily one of the best Cuban dishes. It's a food you have to try.

### Chicken rice

It is one of the favorite dishes in Cuba. The rice for this dish is Valencian short grain rice, the same as for paella. In contrast, traditional saffron is not used, but instead uses Achiote Petróleo to provide a yellow color.

### Cuban sandwich

You can serve a Cuban sandwich in many ways, but only one is traditional. A real Cuban sandwich will not contain mayonnaise, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, peppers or jalapeños. The pork gives it an authentic taste.

### Moros y Cristianos

No other typical Cuban dish is better represented than Moros y Cristianos. Black beans are served with fluffy white rice. Some Cubans serve rice with individual beans and others mix it. You can order it both ways.

### Meals in restaurants

Only a few years ago, almost all restaurants in Cuba were owned by the government. As a result, Cuban food was often described by foreigners as food without the variety and quality of ingredients. But now things have changed and it's hard to imagine a trip to Cuba without dinner at Paladar - one of Cuba's private restaurants.

Paladares first appeared in Cuba in 1993, during a time in Cuban history called the Special Period. After the fall of the USSR, it was an economic crisis that hit the lives of all Cubans hard. During this period, the government was forced to legalize to some extent small private enterprises to help the country improve its economic situation and the quality of life of people in general. So the first Paladares came to the fore.

So what do Paladares offers? It's hard to imagine a Cuban restaurant without typical Cuban dishes such as black beans, banana chips (known as mariquitas) or broken fried bananas (tostones), lobsters, shredded beef in tomato sauce (ropa vieja) and countless other special dishes. However, not all Paladares specialize in Cuban food. You will find restaurants offering international dishes, Italian, Chinese, Mexican and a number of other specialized restaurants. The vegan scene is also growing in Cuba!

Yet there is one thing about the Cuban paladar that sets them apart from restaurants in other countries, no matter how modern and elegant they may look. Owners of Cuban restaurants must work in conditions where even basic products are in constant deficit. Cubans never know what the next product will disappear from the shelves of shops, and very often the ingredients that are missing are as simple as butter, eggs, milk, potatoes, etc. This is why many Paladares instead print their menus, preferring they let them write on the board: they can change offers so easily, depending on what products are available.

### Street food

Cuban street food is definitely not for everyone. First of all, in order to buy local street food, you will need their local CUP menu, because in most local shops you do not pay with the tourist currency CUC.

However, if you throw away prejudices (especially you won't listen to your brain that tells you, it would definitely not pass hygienically in Europe, you better not even stop here) and you decide to visit such a local stand, you will definitely not regret it. You will find that the food is very tasty and also much cheaper than in tourist restaurants. Breakfast menus that contain sandwiches of your choice, eggs of your choice, a drink from fresh fruit can be bought at these stalls for 25CUP, which is 1CUC! You can't even have breakfast at home for such a price. But again, to be able to order at these street stalls at all, you will need the basics of Spanish.

### What to drink in Cuba

In general, you should avoid tap water in Cuba and stick to drinking bottled water. This includes mixed drinks made from tap water and drinks containing ice made from tap water.

Tip: When you drink water in Cuba at local restaurants, ask for your ice-free drinks.

What you definitely drink in Cuba is rum. Which is very high quality and cheap by our standards. Do not be afraid to order a "glass" for 1 CUC on your first visit to a bar in Havana right after landing, fearing that it will be only about 0.2dcl as in other European countries. During the next "round" they will not pour into new glasses, but for the amount they pour into that one "shot" you are about 1dcl to 1.5dcl, which probably depends on the mood of the operator and therefore do not be afraid to smile. And it will definitely help if you speak at least broken Spanish.

Traditional Cuban drinks usually still contain Cuban rum and most often Havana Club. When visiting Cuba, you will definitely order at least one Cuba Libre, but don't be surprised that it doesn't contain Coca-Cola. It does not exist as an American product in Cuba. So the traditional Cuba Libre drink is served with a cola drink, but not Coca-Cola and lime juice. Other drinks include Piña Colada, Daiquiri, Mojito, Havana Loco, Cuban beers such as Crystal and Buchanero and, of course, fresh coconut juice.

As we have mentioned several times in Cuba, it depends on what currency you pay and what facilities you eat.

## Where to eat best in Cuba

Dining options in Cuba are plentiful and these mainly depend on your budget and preferences. If you want to experience authentic Cuba, be sure not to miss the local stalls and restaurants. Also, if you are staying in "Casa particular" then you have the opportunity to try home cooking. Tourist restaurants mainly in Havana and other tourist areas are also already in this period to choose from a large number. Therefore, do not be afraid to talk to local people to advise you which restaurant to visit or where to eat, depending on what you are looking for.

Food

Havana Airport is the hub of the Cuban airlines Cubana de Aviacion, Aerogaviota and AeroCaribbean, and also operates flights to more than 25 international airlines.

It is named in memory of the famous Cuban patriot and poet Joseph Marti.

Aeropuerto Internacional Jose Marti has four passenger terminals and one cargo terminal:

### Terminal 1 - domestic terminal

It was an international terminal, now used mainly for domestic flights and located on the west side of runway 6. It is used mainly at Cubana de Aviacion, Aerogaviota and AeroCaribbean.

### Terminal 2 - US Charters Terminal

It mainly handles planned charter flights of special offices to / from the United States. It is located on the north side of the airport in front of the threshold of runway 24. This terminal has undergone extensive reconstruction and expansion in the last few years.

### Terminal 3 - international terminal

It is the largest and most modern terminal. It was inaugurated in 1998 by Fidel Castro and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. It handles flights for more than 25 international airlines and serves approximately 60 destinations in more than 30 countries. It is located in the middle of the north side of the track.

### Terminal 5 - Caribbean Terminal

It is mainly used by Cuban airlines AeroCaribbean (domestic and regional flights) and Aerotaxi (domestic charter flights).

## Varadero

The Varadero Peninsula, which is historically interesting but unethical in terms of tourism, stretches into the Caribbean at the northernmost point of Cuba. It is about 2 hours east of Havana. The American mafia wanted to build a section of casinos from this peninsula to Havana - to name it Casino Coast. However, when Castro took control of the corrupt Batista, he kicked out the mafia that started Las Vegas in Nevada.

This peninsula has one of the most beautiful coasts in the country. The problem, however, is that the resorts lining the beach completely spoil it. It is definitely an excellent choice for an all-inclusive holiday, but you don't need to spend more than 2 days to explore Cuba.

At the beginning of the peninsula there is even a gate that prevents Cubans from entering.

## Vinales Valley

Explore this vast valley nestled in the Sierra de Los Órganos. This UNESCO-listed site is full of small towns, towering, round limestone cliffs, straight pine trees and traditional tobacco farms. Ride a bike, hike or horseback through a lush valley and enjoy a slow lifestyle. The largest cigar brands in the country come with tobacco grown in the Valle de Viñales, an area that embodies rural Cuban life.

## Topes de Collantes National Park

The Topes de Collantes Nature Reserve is full of natural beauty. The caves are hidden among ferns, palm trees and bananas. Rivers flow through valleys and waterfalls fall into crystal clear lakes. Due to the climate, this region is an important ecosystem for many colorful endemic birds in Cuba. It's a great place to visit. The nature reserve is located between Cienfuegos and Trinidad in central Cuba and includes 5 smaller parks. Each park has at least one short well-defined hiking trail that can be easily followed without a guide. Each path is different, but most winds through misty forests and ends at a waterfall with a reflection in the jungle or natural swimming pool. Trinidad has the second largest collection of world heritage after Havana. ## Havana

Old Havana, or Habana Vieja, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is because it is the best place to preserve the history of Cuba. So much so that you will feel that time has stopped here. Playa Pilar is often described as the most beautiful beach in Cuba, it has all the ingredients - dusty sand, warm clear water and more peace than the beaches in the neighboring village of Cayo Coco. Pilar was also a popular hiding place for the American writer Ernest Hemingway. Pilar is definitely a beach where time seems to have stopped. Try snorkeling, windsurfing, swimming or sailing on a nearby island.

### Cayo Coco

Cayo Coco is a stunning country beach known for appearing in two hemingway novels, Creek Islands and The Old Man and the Sea. The beach is connected to mainland Cuba by a bridge, but you can also travel by air to the Jardines del Rey archipelago. White sand beaches are covered with cloudless skies and plenty of sunshine and the gently flowing water is a beautiful turquoise color. Visit the Parque Natural, where you will find crocodiles, turtles and flamingos.

### Cayo Largo

Playa Paraíso or Paradise Beach is an idyllic Cuban beach that looks like it was cut from a magazine. Located on the island of Cayo Largo del Sur, the beach strip has fine white sand, shocking blue water and a dry, sunny climate, ideal for beach hatching. If you want to do more than just relax and unwind, Playa Paraíso is not for you, but if you enjoy enjoying crystal clear water, clear skies and lots of sunshine, this is the best place to go in Cuba.

### Cayo Santa Maria

The beautiful beaches of Cayo Santa Maria cover almost the entire length of the north coast of the island. They are divided into nine parts with a total length of approximately 13 km of sand.

The whole archipelago is part of the UNESCO "Reserva de Biosfera Buenavista"; and part of the beach on the eastern tip of Cayo Santa Maria, Playa Las Gaviotas, is part of a protected natural refuge where no hotel will be built.

The first word that comes to mind when describing the beach on Cayo Santa Maria is: stunning! They are made of very fine white sand with crystal clear turquoise water. Some sections of the beach are separated by short rocky sections (emerging coral reefs). When crossing these natural obstacles, we recommend wearing shoes to get to the next part of the sand.

The entrance to the water is not too steep or too gentle, so there is no need to walk hundreds of meters before the water is at shoulder level. The beaches are mostly oriented to the north; This means that if you are sitting on the beach overlooking the sea, the sun is behind you.

### Cayo Guillemro

Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo are the third largest tourist hotspots in Cuba. It makes sense, considering that the beaches here are beautiful and the ocean warm. There are no cities on the islands and the infrastructure is mostly complex. This makes this destination less attractive for travelers who want to immerse themselves in Cuban culture - you won't find much here. However, if your goal is to kick the beach for a few days, this is a good place.

Cayo Guillermo is adjacent to Cayo Coco and lies west of it. It is a much smaller island - only 18 km2 in total - and has fewer hotels. The hotels are located along the 5 km long Playa El Paso. Paragliding and kite-surfing are popular here and you will often see several kite-surfers jumping on the waves at Playa El Paso. The best beach in the area is on the western tip of Cayo Guillermo - on Playa Pilar there is a beautiful white sand beach leaning on the dunes. The restaurant serves local seafood and cold beers.

### Playa Ancon v Trinidadu

It may not have the clear turquoise hue of Cuba's northern beaches, but Playa Ancón is probably one of the most beautiful cliffs and certainly the best of the south coast.
